Controllables are the parts of life that are fully within our power—things like our focus, our perspective, and our attitude. When we take ownership of these areas, we become more influential. And because these things are within everyone’s control, anyone has the ability to become an influential leader by mastering them!
Controlling the controllables can help us become more influential leaders in five key ways:
● Taking full responsibility
● Serving others
● Leading by example
● Communicating effectively
● Controlling your mind
Taking full responsibility means doing everything within our power to control what we can. Some of the most important things we can control—and must take full responsibility for—are our confidence, our humility, and our genuine love for others.
These traits are important because they help us serve others at a high level. The best leaders are always servants. And the more we serve, the more trust we build—and the more influence we gain.
Influence is built through leading by example. When we consistently put in effort and do the right things, we inspire others to do the same. That consistency builds credibility, which gives us the ability to hold people accountable without being hypocrites.
Leading by example also strengthens our communication—because when our actions align with our words, those words carry more weight and influence.
But most importantly, influence starts in the mind. If we can’t control our thoughts, it becomes much harder to control anything else. But when we master our minds, it becomes easier to master everything else too!
Bottom line: Anyone can control the controllables, which means anyone can become influential. All it takes is a decision.
